Answer sheet evaluation using AI, with the teacher still in charge

Most of the marking in an Indian classroom is handwritten answer copies: the weekly test, the holiday assignment, the chapter-end worksheet. An AI answer sheet checker takes that pile off the desk — but a grade with no reason is not something a teacher can sign. So this one shows its working on every question, and hands you a draft rather than a result.

What you get back

For every sheet: a total, a grade, a two-line overall remark, and for every question the marks awarded, whether it was right, partly right or wrong, and one line saying why. Partial credit is awarded where the working deserves it. You read the reasons, change anything you disagree with, and release.

What it is not

Not a plagiarism checker — in India “copy checking” means checking answer copies, and that is the sense here. Not an OMR scanner: bubbles and MCQs are better served by a quiz that marks itself. And not an anonymous upload box: it lives inside your institute’s own Symbiont app, where the sheets, the students and the marks already are.

From the answer key to released marks

The same four steps you see in the recording, in words. Each unlocks when the one before it is done, and a step that half-finished says exactly how many sheets are through.

    Upload the answer key

    A photo, a scan or a PDF of the marking scheme. A typed PDF is read from its text directly and costs no AI request; a scan is read the same way the sheets are.

    Students send their sheets

    From the student app: a phone photo per page (JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB) or a PDF up to 25 MB. Multi-page sheets are read in one go.

  3. 03

    Read, then graded

    Each sheet is read into text in about eight seconds, then the whole batch is graded against your key in one call, about seventeen seconds. Partial credit where the working earns it; an unreadable sheet gets 0 and a remark, never a guess.

    You review and release

    Open any sheet, change a mark or a reason, then release the class in one tap. Marks reach students only at this step.

Questions teachers ask

Before you upload the first answer key

Does it really read handwriting?

Yes. A student photographs the sheet on a phone and the AI reads the handwriting into text first, then grades that text against your key. The sheet shown on this page is an 831 KB phone photo of a handwritten answer sheet, and the text beside it is what came back. Neat writing reads best; a clear, straight, well-lit photo matters more than the camera.

Does it read Hindi?

It is built to. The reader is told to expect Hindi (Devanagari), English or a mix, handwritten or typed, and to keep the text exactly as written. Our own test sheets so far have been in English, so treat Hindi as supported rather than proven on this page; if you run a Hindi class through it we would like to hear how it did.

What do I upload, and what do students upload?

You upload only the answer key — a photo, a scan, or a PDF. If the PDF is a typed document its text is read directly and costs no AI request at all. Students upload their own sheets from the student app: JPG, PNG or WebP photos up to 10 MB, or a PDF up to 25 MB, multi-page if the assignment ran to several sheets.

How long does a class take?

Reading a sheet takes about eight seconds and grading a batch about seventeen, measured on real jobs. A class of thirty is therefore a few minutes, most of it reading, and you can leave the page while it runs — each step shows how many sheets are done.

Does it give partial marks?

Yes, and it says why. The instruction to the grader is to be fair but strict and to award partial credit for partly correct answers. On the sheet above, question 1 got 7 out of 10 because the working and the answer were right but the law was stated without ‘at constant temperature’.

What happens if a sheet cannot be read?

It is not guessed. An unreadable sheet gets 0 with the remark “Submission unreadable”, a blank question gets 0 with “Not attempted”, and you see both in the draft before anything is released — so a bad photo costs a retake, not a wrong mark.

Can I change the AI’s marks?

Yes, every one of them. The result is a draft: you open any sheet, change a mark or a remark, then release the class in one tap. Nothing reaches a student until you do, and the draft carries the note “Graded by AI. Please review before releasing marks to students.”

Is it free? What does “free AI quota” mean?

AI grading is included in every Symbiont plan, including Basic, which is free for an institute up to 50 students with no card — so yes, AI grading free to start, in an AI grading app you already have. Is this a copy checking app for plagiarism?

No. In India “copy checking” means checking answer copies, and that is what this is: an answer copy checking tool for handwritten class work. It does not compare a student’s text against the internet or other students. If you need a plagiarism checker, this is not it.

What about MCQ or OMR sheets?

This checker is for written answers. For multiple-choice tests the better route is a quiz that marks itself: convert the paper with paper to quiz, or let students practise from the CBSE practice papers, and the marks arrive without a sheet to read.
